kapposmonster

Addendum: In looking back on this post, it may come off as I’m siding with this letter writer. Nothing could be further from the truth. I was attempting to use irony to demonstrate the intransigence and irrationality of some opponents of patent reform.

Don’t think David Kappos, director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, is a polarizing figure for some? Consider this e-mail exchange I had with one subscriber, er, make that ex-subscriber, yesterday. As  a business owner, I make it a policy to be unfailingly nice to customers and potential customers. Sometimes, however, no good deed goes unpunished.

By way of background, we’re reaching out to those whose subscriptions are about to lapse. This gentlemen let us know in no uncertain terms his stance:

As long as your organization supports the likes of David Kappos the Obama appointee who wants to change US patent filings to match the stupid European model, I cannot support you with a subscription.

Perhaps if you review past patent law passage going back to the first years of the Bush 2 administration when the watering down began you will see what I mean. Kappos is out to destroy the patent system even further with his first to file crap, and I have spent enough money filing and trying to defend patents to be intimately familiar with the ramifications.

Apparently Inventor’s Digest wants to sweep the truth under the table.  Some inventor magazine you are!!! Sickening.

Steve,

If you’re in the Northern California area this Saturday, perhaps you may like to vent at David Kappos. [He’s speaking at the Inventors’ Alliance, an inventor organization founded by Andrew Krauss. His partner at InventRight is an occasional speaker at the group and sent out the note of Kappos’ presentation.]

Please see this thread.

How can you actually endorse this monster. First to file is total crap.

Remember when the legislature under Bush 2 removed the 17 years term of a patent and decided that 20 years was the way to go from the DATE OF SUBMISSION NOT ISSUANCE. That was another step towards destruction of the system in favor of the big guys.

To add insult that same legislation allowed PUBLICATION of patent apps 18 months after submission.

All done to help big companies.

I cannot support your magazine with a subscription if you are taking a favorable position on Kappos. My patent lawyers don’t like the direction he is going either.

I don’t need to listen to his political spin.

Good luck with your magazine. I will not spend another dime in it as long as you support this monster from Obama.

I live by the invention and am reluctant to file more patents which I was going to do. I have one pending now but its pre-Krappos.

Have fun with you [sic] new government buddy.

Likewise, I guess however you should not deceive readers into thinking this is a good guy. He is not.

BTW, when people use the term “passionate” it means they don’t really give a damn about what was told to them.

Sorry. I call it like it is.  You are obviously just out to sell magazines.

Sad
