Tom Roering is an ice fisherman who invented a lightweight amphibious vehicle that is also an ice fishing shelter. It’s called the Wilcraft (“Wil” stands for water, ice, and land). If it falls through the ice, it floats.

“It’s natural to be intellectually attracted to those who take their ideas further than we the rest of us do.”

– David Friedman

An inventor caught the eye of photographer David Friedman at the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, a couple of years ago.

The encounter inspired him.

Since then, he’s started a portfolio of independent inventors. He’s been attending inventor group meetings and networking online to find more subjects.

He plans to compile his warm, stylized images in a coffee table at some point. Meanwhile, the work-in-progress is available on his Web site.

“I think everyone has a little bit of an inventor in them,” Friedman says. “Everyone gets an idea for a product or how to improve a product. I think it’s interesting that there are people who take the next step. And that they do it for different motivations – novelty, profit motive, saving lives. It’s natural to be intellectually attracted to those who take their ideas further than we the rest of us do.”

Don’t be camera shy.

If you’re an inventor, David Friedman wants to photograph you.
