Tommyfounder_tomFrustration spurred Tom Patterson’s quest to reinvent men’s undergarments. The founder of Tommy John undershirts appears on Got Invention Radio tonight to share the secrets of his success.

The former medical device salesman thought he could improve the un-tailored generic t-shirt, which failed to flatter men’s bodies. Generic cotton Ts also tend to shrink and develop yellow stains in the armpits.

Last year he launched the Tommy John line of men’s shirts and undershirts to “reinvent the foundations of a man’s wardrobe.” Made from a fabric blend that offers multi-directional stretching, combined with patent pending Tailored Stretch Technology, Tommy John undershirts combine stretch fabric, longer length, and a tailored cut design, allowing them to comfortably hug the torso, stay tucked in place, and easily move with the body.

Tommy John’s “Ultimate Undershirt” has had record sell throughs at both Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom and is quickly becoming a leader in the industry.

Raised in Milbank, South Dakota — population: 3,600, Patterson always had an entrepreneurial spirit. He started a number of small businesses when he was younger and always knew that one day he would build a successful brand from the ground up.

Before starting Tommy John, Patterson attended Arizona State University and then worked as a medical device salesman for seven years. Today, Patterson lives in Los Angeles and on days he isn’t solving men’s undergarment problems, he enjoys traveling to Brazil and New Zealand, yoga, surfing, lifting weights, playing golf, and hunting.
