Friend of Innovation Award

Financier and philanthropist Gregory Barnhill has earned the inaugural Inventors Digest Friend of Innovation Award for his tireless support of youth innovation, science and medicine.

Barnhill, 57, of Stevenson, Maryland, serves as chairman of the board of By Kids For Kids, a Stamford-based organization that hosts inventing contests for youth with major corporations.

He has been instrumental in securing corporate sponsorships for many BKFK contests, including this year’s Nucor Strength of Steel Challenge, which tasked contestants with inventing something from recycled steel.

Inventors Digest, the nation’s longest-running media outlet for the inventing industry, launched its Friend of Innovation program this year to further foster U.S. technology development and manufacturing.

“Our awards will go to accomplished professionals who have contributed to advancements in innovation,” said Inventors Digest Content Director Mike Drummond. “Mr. Barnhill’s selfless contributions have helped fuel the dreams of countless kids. We can think of no one better to receive our first Friend of Innovation Award.”

Barnhill’s long list of community involvement includes:

He is a partner in Baltimore-based Brown Advisory Securities LLC, a member firm of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc. (FINRA). He joined the company in 1975, following his graduation from Brown University with a degree in economics.

He previously served as managing director of North American Equity Sales at Deutsche Banc Alex Brown Inc., an investment services firm.

Barnhill is on the board of Pure Bioscience Inc. (NASDAQ: PURE) and Osiris Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: OSIR).

He holds NYSE/NASD licenses, as well as life, health, and variable-annuities insurance licenses.

Barnhill also has completed several professional courses of study at universities in France and the U.S., including the Wharton School and the Banque Nationale de Paris.
